School Holiday Program: Empowering Youth in the East Kimberley

Our East Kimberley team recently completed two weeks of school holiday programming in Kununurra, Wyndham and Warmun.

15 teams attended the Kununurra Street Ball Tournament in the Term 1 School Holidays.

Our East Kimberley team spent the term 1 school holiday period engaging young people in Wyndham, Kununurra and Warmun.

Our school holiday programming is delivered in partnership with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC).

The DLGSC supports Garnduwa to create more opportunities for young people to be physically active to address risk factors and social determinants of health.

Garnduwa Coordinator Matt prioritises creating more opportunities for more young people.

Isolated towns and communities can often experience less activation and recreation when school takes a break. Our Active Communities Coordinator in the East Kimberley, Matt Arnold believes that it is an important time to ramp up service delivery.

“We really want to try and encourage healthy lifestyles, even though it’s nice to sit at home and play video games over the school holiday, we want to give as many kids as possible that option to get involved with sport,” he said.

Matt connected with a strong network of partner organisation and service providers to deliver a varied program that focussed on sport but also included artistic and expressive activities as well as health promotion and education.

Kununurra: Street Basketball

In Kununurra a 3v3 basketball tournament, involving seven junior and eight senior teams was delivered.

The event was well attended and was supported by close to 20 volunteers from partner organisations.

Headspace and the Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service delivered educational sessions on mental health awareness and the dangers of smoking and vaping respectively.

Close to 20 volunteers from 5 partner organisations supported the event.

Wyndham: Basketball and Art

In Wyndham, a 5v5 basketball game was held with the support of the Wyndham Youth Aboriginal Corporation.

Alongside the game, an arts and crafts station was set up, allowing for some variety and expression to compliment a long day of basketball.

Our school holiday programming is designed to contribute to the physical, social, and emotional well-being of participants. Utilising sport to integrate opportunities for connection as well as health-based education.

We would like to thank the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries for the continued commitment to activating Kimberley communities, through their support of grass roots organisations.
