Garnduwa recognised at the 2025 Broome Business Excellence Awards

Garnduwa Amboorny Wirnan Aboriginal Corporation has been recognised with the 2025 Broome Business Excellence Award for Small Not-for-Profit, presented by the Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).

The award celebrates Garnduwa’s community-first approach and the impact of programs delivered from Broome throughout the Kimberley, building healthy, active and strong Aboriginal communities through sport, recreation and leadership.

A Broome-based organisation with regional reach

Proudly Aboriginal-owned and led, Garnduwa operates from its Broome base to deliver youth wellbeing, sport, leadership and cultural programs across more than 35 Kimberley communities.

Our programs are more than activities; they create consistent, culturally safe spaces where young people can grow strong in spirit, culture and connection.

Over the past year, Garnduwa delivered more than 1,000 sessions, engaging over 25,000 participants, 91% of whom were Aboriginal children and young people. Each session is designed in partnership with communities, schools and families to reflect local strengths and aspirations.

Gratitude to BCCI and community

Garnduwa CEO Mick Albert said the award recognised the collective effort behind every program.

“We’re proud to be recognised, and we thank the Broome Chamber not only for this award, but for their ongoing support of local organisations,” Mr Albert said.

“This recognition belongs to our people, the communities who work alongside us from Bidyadanga to Wyndham, Fitzroy to Halls Creek. Our staff, our board, our youth leaders and partners all play a vital role in what Garnduwa delivers.”

Community-led and culturally grounded

Garnduwa’s programs are designed by and for Aboriginal people. From Deadly Diva Days and youth leadership camps to basketball, AFL, athletics and cultural activities, each initiative celebrates local culture and leadership.

In 2025, Garnduwa began a major strategic planning process led by Kimberley staff and community voices to guide the organisation’s next three years.

Looking ahead, Garnduwa remains committed to expanding local employment pathways, strengthening partnerships and continuing to deliver culturally strong, community-led programs that support the next generation of Kimberley leaders.
