Term 4 in the Valley

Our Active Communities Coordinator Sam has been running basketball, footy and soccer across Muludja, Bayulu and Yakanarra communities this term. After the lockdown, communities in the Valley are beginning to open up and get active again. The number of kids coming down and participating grows weekly, starting with only five young people, Garnduwa now has 25 kids participating regularly in Bayulu. One week we were joined by Football West and Helping Minds to run an afternoon soccer session! It is deadly to see soccer taking off in community.

Over the school holidays, Garnduwa partnered with FairGame to run active school holiday programs for Yakanarra. Some of the kids in community took our team on a cultural walk, showing us and the crew from FairGame some spots that were special to them.

Garnduwa travelled to Muludja community for NAIDOC week. We ran afternoon basketball and played a traditional Indigenous game ‘Edor’, which was a hit with the kids.

Throughout November, we have had two work experience students from the Yiramalay/Wesley School on board. Renisha and Kelwin have been working with us to plan our sessions, travel to community and run basketball and soccer. Our team in the Valley were impressed with their initiative and work ethic, always happy to lend a hand and learn.
