Smarter Than Smoking West Kimberley Young Men's Leadership Camp
Garnduwa’s West Kimberley Young Men's Leadership Camp sponsored by Smarter Than Smoking was held on the 3rd – 6th May 2018, with great success. We had a fantastic turn out of participants from a range of communities across the West Kimberley including Fitzroy Crossing, Joy Springs, Bidyadanga, Beagle Bay, Looma and Broome. We were also lucky enough to have Sam Wallace and 3 young men from Christ Church Grammar School come along and take part in the camp.
The Camp which was held at Arrow Pearl Farm in Beagle Bay on the Dampier Peninsula is designed to reward and upskill young leaders within their respective communities. Young Men are nominated based on their participation in Garnduwa’s programs and performance at school. But primarily for being strong role models and their potential as young leaders within their communities into the future.
Over the 3 days the camp was filled with teambuilding exercises, healthy lifestyle challenges, sports coaching delivery to Sacred Heart School students and cultural and recreational activities. Throughout the entirety the boys showed a willingness to learn and push themselves and one another beyond their comfort zone. It was a pleasure to see them grow in confidence and create new friendships with boys from different walks of life.
Garnduwa would like to thank Brendan Smith from Beagle Bay Community and the Nyul Nyul Rangers for taking the group on a full day cultural tour of the Beagle Bay area. The group had a great time hunting for fish, crabs and shellfish and cooking it all up on the fire. Brendan and the Rangers then made spears with the boys using the traditional technique which the boys took home. We’d also like to thank Brock and Paul from Kimberley Manufacturing Pty Ltd for the kind donation of equipment for spear making and crabbing.
The camp would not have been possible without the support and generosity, for the second year running, of Steve Arrow and Erin Ashmore for the amazing facilities and camping spot at the Arrow Pearl Farm. The use of the kitchen for their meals and the activities and games, including the Healthy Eating MasterChef Challenge was a huge help!
Finally, we’d like to congratulate and thank all the young men who were chosen and travelled long distances to be a part of the camp. Everyone gave 100% and took some valuable lessons out of the camp. We look forward to following your journeys as young leaders and wish you the best of luck into the future!
