The Smarter than Smoking High School Girls Football Carnival was held in Derby on 25 March 2015. Schools came from near and far to compete in this exciting carnival which saw more than 100 young women showing off their amazing skills on the football field. Each team played two hard fought games with St. Mary’s coming out as the winners on the day.

Best on ground for St. Mary’s were Natasha Lawford and Brianna Uhl with Brianna displaying some superb foot skills when she kicked a check-side goal curving the flight of the ball to give herself the best chance at scoring. All teams played really well and showed great improvement since the last carnival. This is a huge credit to those dedicated teachers who have been working with the girls over these past months. We want to thank everyone for their attendance, sportsmanship and competitive play, especially the Fitzroy Girls Academy and La Grange School which really stepped up this year bringing a full squad of girls who brought their competitive spirits on the day.

We would like to thank Paul Bridge, Principal of Derby District High School, for providing the venue for us to host the carnival as well as all teams that competed on the day. A huge thank you also goes to Saverio (Bayo) Yambo and Curtley Hunter, two local Derby District High School Alumni for volunteering their time to come down and assist!

Garnduwa staff were on the lookout for students who showed some real enthusiasm and dedication to the game. These girls will be invited to participate in a women’s exhibition match that will be held in Broome later on this year. We will have more information on this exhibition posted on our website in the coming months.
