Smarter than Smoking Boab Challenge
On Wednesday the 12th of November, three West Kimberley high schools sent their boys basketball teams to the land of the Boab Trees to answer the challenge to a great basketball competition. The teams from Fitzroy Crossing and Broome descended upon Derby to compete in Derby’s annual Boab Basketball Challenge. This event is a competition for two divisions with years 7, 8, and 9 in the Junior’s Division and years 10, 11, and 12 in the Senior’s Division. Broome stepped up its game and took away the Senior Boys Grand Final when they defeated the Derby 2 Team 22 points to 12 points. However, in the Junior Division, Derby 1 Team walked away victorious when they defeated the Broome side 26 points to 12 points thus keeping one of the two shields at home.
Part of this spectacular event is our Slam Dunk Contest. Each team nominates its best leaper to represent them in the contest. Each competitor has to put his dunking skills on display by combining creativity, athleticism and grace to wow the judges and spectators. The most impressive dunking will earn the winner bragging rights for a year once his name is etched on the Boab Slam Dunk Challenge Champions Shield. This year’s Junior Dunk Champion, Nathan Woodhouse of Derby, scored a total of 30 votes beating the runner-up and fellow Derby local, Cameron Sturt, who scored 29 votes. In the Senior Division, Latrell Matthews was crowned Dunk Champion when he defeated his fellow teammate, Damon Enosa, in an awesome display of leaping ability and athleticism.
