On Tuesday 5th September, 47 young women aged 12-17 from Kununurra, Wyndham, Warmun and Kalumburu participated in Garnduwa’s Smarter than Smoking Deadly Diva Day at the Kununurra Leisure Centre.

This day is about arming the young women of the East Kimberley with information on how to lead a positive, healthy life. There are many services in the area that can help people do this and we were fortunate enough to be joined by 5 different groups which meant 5 entertaining, informative session for the girls to be involved in. These included cooking tasty meals for all of us to enjoy for morning tea and lunch. They learnt the art of hand massage with natural products as a way of connecting and yarning to people about what matters. The girls were educated on the effects of alcohol on the body and informed about sexual health. They yarned with the Deadly Thinking ladies about who they can turn to when things get tough and who can help them. Lastly they celebrated the clean air that they have and were taught what can happen if they damage that clean air by smoking.

A massive thank you must go to the service providers that ran sessions. Without them, days like this just don’t happen; Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Services, OVAHS FASD and TIS programs, Kimberley Population Health Unit and Waringarri Aboriginal Corporation.  Each of the girls was given a health and wellness bag to take home which was added to by the very generous people at Tuckerbox Kununurra.

The day was a huge success largely due to the effort that this year’s Deadly Divas put in on the day. Congratulations to all of them especially those that danced right to the end with the hip hop session choreographed by Addicted to Dance Studio in Kununurra.

See you next year you Deadly Divas!
