Incredible Skill and Hard Play Showcased at the 2015 Kimberley 16s Football Championship
The 2015 Kimberley 16s Football Championship was held on the 14th and 15th of April in Fitzroy Crossing. This event is held as the first phase of the North West 16s Academy. It is an opportunity for players to showcase their talent in order to earn a spot on the North West squad to compete in May at the Northern Australian Cup in Darwin.
Teams from the three corners of the Kimberly and a team from the Pilbara converged on the Fitzroy Town Oval and brought their best football to make for a memorable regional encounter. Mary Aiken, a Bunuba Elder, began the weekend with a Welcome to Country for all participants and set the tone of the carnival by encouraging the young players to respect each other and the people on whose country they would play. After this opening the players were ready to get on the football oval and start competing.
There was plenty of tough, disciplined play but the cohesion of the team from the Pilbara led them to victory and earned them the Kimberley 16s Football Championship Cup. It was a great weekend of hard fought football, all-star talent and spirited play. The teams showed a high level of skill and talent which made the selection for the North West team especially difficult. Darren Davis from the West Australian Football Commission said, “The game between the Kimberley All Stars and the Pilbara was one of the better games of football he has seen from players of this age”.
