Good Times with Great Friends in Fitzroy
September has been an exceptionally busy month for the Fitzroy Valley Garnduwa staff. Chaz “Lanky” Garnett has arrived back in Fitzroy to fill the gap and help keep everything running smoothly following Cissy Gore-Birch moving on from her position. The month started off with our big movie screening of Putuparri and the Rainmakers. It was exciting to see the massive turnout and great to be part of providing the town with fun entertainment. This film went on to win the Best Film Award at the CinéfestOZ Film Festival Western Australia.
Following on from this event was Child Protection Week. To celebrate the week and kick off proceedings Garnduwa held an event day with soccer and football activities taking centre stage. The next day Nindilingarri held a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness March. Thomas Luscombe, Garnduwa’s Fitzroy Valley Youth Recreation Officer, attended the event and ran a face painting booth. ABC-TV sent their Four Corners crew to film activities involving FASD kids who attend the program.
The Smarter than Smoking Drop-In afternoons continue to make a variety of sporting and recreational activities available for the Fitzroy youth. Also, the ever-popular monthly Disco attracted over 120 kids. It was a fun evening with music, dancing and limbo contests.
