Fitzroy Valley "Smarter Than Smoking" Junior Basketball Carnival

Garnduwa played host to five schools in the Valley for the annual “Smarter than Smoking” Junior Basketball Carnival. The event was held in Fitzroy Crossing, with 70 students taking part in the round robin competition. Eight teams battled it out in the Kimberley heat with Bayulu 1 taking the honours with a clean sweep of their round games.

FVDHS were kind enough to supply senior students as volunteers, even Primary School teacher and Garnduwa Chair, Marmingee Hand grabbed a whistle to lend a hand.

Special thanks to Ross Cameron from Nindilingarri who ran a stretching and injury prevention workshop for the players and to the Shire of Derby and West Kimberley for the use of the facilities.

The day was a culmination of the 6-week Aussie hoops program run by Garnduwa staff. The program has the aim to allow kids from the Valley the chance to experience organised Basketball trainings and games, seldom enjoyed outside the Metro areas. The Carnival will be a mainstay in the Valley with an aim to eventually grow into a weekly competition.
