On the 14th of August 2014, we saw the epic battle between some of our best young Kimberley footballers playing for their primary school teams as they competed for the coveted Fremantle Dockers Shield.

The teams came from as far as Halls Creek, Kalumburu, Warmun and Timber Creek to play the Kununurra Scrub Bulls and the St. Joseph’s footy teams in games held in blustery conditions on the “MCG” town oval in Kununurra.

The first game was an awesome encounter between bitter rivals, the Kununurra Scrub Bulls and the Halls Creek Cowboys. From the first bounce the contest was fierce and by the looks in the Halls Creek players’ eyes they were there to take the Shield back home. The Scrub Bulls did not back down and fought until the end but went down to an ecstatic Cowboys team.

The games that followed were fast and furious based on attack and little defence as teams traded blows. Kalumburu combined forces with Warmun and were a formidable side as they notched up a first round win. The Timber Creek Bombers were flying high as they took their first win. The St. Joseph’s team played awesome games with some of the “big men” in the competition allowing them to have centre clearances that made it difficult for other teams to stop their dominance in the middle.

The all-round performance from the Halls Creek Cowboys team could not be stopped and they ended the competition victorious. The Cowboys took away the 2014 Fremantle Dockers Shield to send it back to the Desert for a second year in a row.
