Yurmulun Community is located 50km southwest of Derby and is situated along the banks of the Fitzroy River. The river is about 500m from the centre of the community and the kids of the community love to head down there. Anna Cox, Yurmulun Chairperson, and Tracey Charles, volunteer community member, came up with the unique idea of educating their kids in water awareness before the start of the wet season. Anna explained that this idea came about from the worry that the adults have when the kids take off down the river to swim for hours without adult supervision.

Garnduwa assists with after school activities each Monday so Anna and Tracey approached us about delivering a Water Safety Awareness Program as part of our Smarter than Smoking Active Community Development Program. Garnduwa has been teaching the kids skills and information about being able to identify the depth of the water prior to entering, checking for under water obstacles, checking water clarity to ensure that it is safe to swim in and basic swimming and survival techniques.

The Water Awareness Program has been such a success that the kids really look forward to Mondays when Garnduwa arrives and more and more participants join each week.
