The Derby Boab Basketball Carnival hosted by the Derby Basketball Association (DBA) was held on the 5-6 July 2014. This was the largest number of teams that the DBA has ever managed with 20 men’s and 14 women’s teams participating. The carnival drew a large crowd which added to the atmosphere and excitement for the whole weekend.

The highlights of The Boab Carnival were the two grand final games. The finalists for the women were the teams from One Arm Point and Billard. This was a very tight game with both teams displaying strong offensive tactics resulting in a game where the women were exchanging goal for goal. Despite both teams being evenly matched and the game coming down to the wire, there was room for only one winner. Billard was victorious and won the final by 2 points with Larna O’Reary of Billard claiming the MVP.

The men did not disappoint either with very intense and hard-fought game between the Mowanjum Heat and the Hedland Pacers. Both teams showed they were worthy of winning the championship through their speed and agility. Mowanjum relied heavily on their three point shooters, as they did throughout the carnival. Unfortunately for the Heat their shots were not dropping which gave the Pacers the luxury of playing their game with fast breaks, smashing the boards, and scoring at will. The game came to a close with the Hedland Pacers winning by 10 points and Kurtis Geary from the Pacers taking the MVP.

To cap off this weekend of great competition the Boab Festival Basketball Carnival named the Most Valuable Players for the women, Josephine Janz of Mulgin, and for the men, Justin King of Mulgin and Bobby Gallagher of Mowanjum, in their respective divisions.
