2015 Garnduwa Festival of Basketball
The annual Garnduwa Festival of Basketball was held in Fitzroy Crossing on the first weekend of the school holidays in September. Seventeen men’s and women’s teams from across the Kimberley converged in Fitzroy to play for bragging rights as this year’s remote community basketball champions. Teams came from far and wide including Beagle Bay, Yurmulun, Halls Creek, Derby and Ngumpan to compete for the Marra Worra Worra Cup in the Men’s Division and the Downer Cup in the Women’s.
Following a weekend of tough competition between all the Women’s teams, Team Frando from Halls Creek clashed with the Moongarti Flames in the grand final. The highly fancied Team Frando ran out eventual winners 26 points to 12 to claim the Downer Cup. Kimberley Pickett was adjudged best on court for the grand final.
In the Men’s Division the grand final of the Marra Worra Worra Cup was an exciting clash between the Yurmulun Spurs from the Derby area and the Beagle Bay Pacers from the Dampier Peninsula. The Yurmulun Spurs claimed the championship defeating the Pacers 31 points to 27. Orlin Nickaloff rounded off a great weekend being named the MVP in the grand final.
The overall Women’s fairest and best was won by Kathleen Ejai with Breana Uhl named as the runner up. The Men’s fairest and best was won by Jamal Bedford with Brodie Albert earning runner up honours.
Top point scorers over the weekend were Bobby Galagher in the Men’s Division with 75 points and Kimberley Pickett in the Women’s Division with 37 points. Tristan McCarthy and Kathleen Ejai won the three point shoot-out champions in their respective divisions.
We would like to send out special thanks to our sponsors Downer and Marra Worra Worra and all of our volunteers, especially the Blue Shirts and Red Shirts. You all made this another unforgettable weekend for all the athletes and the fans.
