The two local Kununurra under-17 teams, the Junior Magpies and the Junior Demons, met in the curtain raiser for the East Kimberley Football League Grand Final. The game started at a fast pace but there were some skill errors as the nerves kicked in with the boys knowing this was the last game for the season. The Junior Magpies kicked the first major for the game and looked in control, but the Junior Demons kicked the next three to go into quarter time up by two goals.

With the inclusion of the more experienced midfield group of Ben McKenna and Peter Ward, who have played senior football this year, the Demons started to get the ascendancy in the middle. With Demons sharp shooter, Dixon Clements, looking dangerous in the forward line, the task was always going to be tough for the Junior Magpies. The third quarter ended with a blow out as the Junior Demons stretched the lead out to a 35-point margin and were in full control of the game. Full Forward, Dixon Clements, kicked five as the Demons ran away with the game by 52 points – 14.4 (90) to 5.3 (33). Best on ground was awarded to Peter Ward of the Junior Demons.

After two gruelling weeks of elimination and semi-final action it was the Ord River Magpies and the Wirrimanu Tigers who remained standing to fight it out in the East Kimberley Football League Grand Final 2015. The Magpies where making their fifth consecutive grand final appearance, but after losing the last two in a row they were hoping that 2015 was their year to shake the “bridesmaid” mantle that was sure to be in the minds of the players as they lined up ready for the first bounce. Their opposition, the Wirrimanu Tigers, were making their first ever grand final appearance after a strong season where they were almost unbeatable at home.

The first quarter saw the Magpies get a jump on their less experienced opponents by booting five goals to two which had the small yet vocal crowd cheering their team on under the bright lights of the “East Kimberley MCG” at the Kununurra Town Oval. The second quarter had the two teams kicking two goals each to have the margin remain at three goals in favour of the Magpies going into half time.

With finals experience on their side the Magpies booted four goals to one in the “Premiership Quarter” to go into the last quarter with a handy six goal lead. The Wirrimanu Tigers managed to kick four goals in a row in the final quarter but the Magpies lead was too great to chase down. In the end, the Magpies prevailed with the win of 12.9 (81) to 9.6 (60) and were named East Kimberley Football League Premiers 2015.
