Noonkanbah Sports Festival 2018

Last weekend (14 - 17/12/18), the community of Yungngora/Noonkanbah saw football and basketball teams from across the Kimberley descend on the community for the 2018 Sports Festival.  Teams from Yungngora, Noonkanbah, Beagle Bay, Mullin, Wangkatjungka, Yakanarra and family teams from across the Kimberley made a great effort to travel far and wide for the festival.

With an emphasis on fair play and sportsmanship community participated in three days of AFL and Basketball in sweltering heat that sapped the energy of the most hardened athletes.

Garnduwa assisted the community with equipment, umpiring, fixturing and support.

Garnduwa’s Yungngora Community Sport and Recreation Officer Trichelle Laurel coordinated the basketball competition on her own and put in an outstanding effort to ensure the competition ran smoothly. Trichelle has been working with Garnduwa for the last twelve months and the training and development she has received paid off as the competition was one of the best the Kimberley has seen. Trichelle is accredit to her community and has a brilliant job in ensuring youth are engaged and kept busy with sport and recreation after school and during school holidays and to organise community festivals like this one.

In the Football, Garnduwa’s Looma Sport and Recreation officer Lewis Broome led the umpiring. He put in a great effort in plus 40 degree temperatures to ensure the football was played fair and within the rules.

Callan Hatchman our Fitzroy Valley Area Manager couldn’t have been prouder of Trichelle and all the work she put in to organising and running the basketball component of the Festival. “What a great achievement. This is what Garnduwa is all about. Being able to develop and upskill community members to be in a position to run and develop their own sport and recreation opportunities,” he said.

Trichelle Laurel added “The festival was a fantastic success and the development and training I have received from Garnduwa certainly gave me the confidence to organise a basketball festival of this size.”

Winners of the Noonkanbah Sports Festival were the Noonkanbah Blues in the footy, Beagle Bay Sisters in Women’s Basketball and the Noonkanbah Flames in girls’ basketball.

Both Trichelle and Lewis will now coordinate the delivery of school holiday programs in their respective communities.
