Sports Programs Resources | Leadership | Young Women's Leadership Camp

One of the main Camps for Young Women includes the Young Women’s Leadership Camp held at El Questro in mid October each year. Over the past three years Garnduwa has formed a strong relationship with El Questro who generously allows the camp to be held on the station free of charge. In addition to this they provide all camp leaders and participants with a meal on one of the evenings during the camp.

The Young Women’s Leadership Camp (YWLC) is an annual event that identifies Kimberley girls that have been selected based on their leadership potential seen through their participation in other Garnduwa programs, at school or within their community.

The event is designed to engage the participants in a number of sessions including health education, alcohol, drugs and mental illness, employment opportunities, nutrition, team building and cultural initiatives. This is achieved through guest speakers and professionals who attend the camp and with expertise in their field deliver engaging and valuable workshops. It is hoped participants will return to their communities with leadership qualities and a knowledge of how to enhance the prospects of community through education, employment, culture and health.

Some of the activities, workshops and events which the Young Women’s Leadership Camps have involved include:

  1. Healthy cooking and nutrition sessions delivered by Boab Health and OVAHS nutritionists and dieticians
  2. Art workshops delivered by Annie Wilson
  3. Music workshops delivered by “Son of Rut” band members
  4. Traditional dance sessions lead by Kerry Aiken of Garnduwa in Fitzroy
  5. Cultural activities lead by Helen Ockerby also of Garnduwa
  6. Suicide Prevention workshops delivered by Aimee Howard from “Alive and Kicking Goals” and Temali Howard from the Department of Corrective Services in Kununurra Beauty
